A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake off Japan’s northeast coast triggered tsunami warnings, mass evacuations and late-night panic, with at least 30 people injured and 90,000 residents moved to safety. Although the Japan Meteorological Agency later lifted all tsunami alerts after only minor sea surges, officials cautioned that the risk of strong aftershocks remains high, issuing a week-long “megaquake” advisory as infrastructure checks and recovery efforts continued across the affected prefecture

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 has struck western Japan on Tuesday, followed by a series of aftershocks. Surveillance footage shows shaking at Tottori, Yonago and Miyoshi city across the Chugoku region when the quake hit just before 10:30am local time. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the epicentre was in eastern Shimane Prefecture and there is no concern for a tsunami.
