It's #BatWeek and we're highlighting Oklahoma's Eastern Red Bat! These brightly colored bats are migratory but can go into a state of physical inactivity similar to hibernation while hiding in leaf litter. | Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC)

This little guy loves munching on a meal worm! Eastern red bats (Lasiurus borealis) are North America's most abundant “tree bats.” They are found wherever there are trees east of the Rocky Mountains from Canada to as far south as central Florida. Eastern red bats roost right out in the foliage of deciduous or sometimes evergreen trees. Despite their bright red color, these bats are actually rather cryptic, looking like dead leaves or pine cones. They are perfectly camouflaged as they hang curled

Fritters another eastern red bat really REALLY loves dinner. Fritters and Ginger Roger’s both sustained head trauma likely from window collisions based on where they were found. Both are responding well to treatment and will hopefully be released in spring ❤️ #pabatrescue #savepabats #lasiurusborealis #easternredbat | Pennsylvania Bat Conservation and Rehabilitation

We also released a pregnant grounded eastern red bat. She had mild bruising and just needed a few days of rest, hydration and nutrients. One of our window strike silver haired bats was also released the same night in a heavily forested and protected area. Be safe batties ❤️ #pabatconservationandrehabilitation #pabatconandrehab #savepabats #lasiurusborealis #easternredbat #lasionycterisnoctivagans #silverhairedbat | Pennsylvania Bat Conservation and Rehabilitation

Totino, a young eastern red bat was found roosting on a wall in the hot July sun for three days. Thankfully a caring member of the public, Tara contacted us immediately. This sweet floof arrived just in time. It took Totino several days to recover from severe starvation and emaciation. After more than a month in care our sweet floof was ready to leave us. Totino was given a second chance at life thanks to Tara and our dedicated team. Be safe Totino ❤️ #pabatconandrehab #pabatconservationandrehab

🦇 Meet *Florian*, our lovely eastern red bat who’s… still tasting dinner, apparently 😋 Sometimes mealtime is *so good* you just have to keep licking the air afterward — you know, to savor every last imaginary bite. 🦟✨ We totally get it, Florian. Say hello to Graham, an Eastern red bat that was found after going for an accidental swim in a nearby lake. He was found treading water and extremely weak, but was saved by some kind people that drove him all the way to us! He arrived in style, comfortably nestled in a graham cracker box. He will be released in a few weeks once he's a bit stronger! ❤️ #bat #wildlife #wildliferescue | Bat World Sanctuary

Seeing bats in the winter? You might spot one flying on a warm winter afternoon. That is when some bats will come out of hibernation to stretch their wings, get a drink of water and snack a few bugs from the air before the night turns cold. But these sightings seem to be more common the last couple years across New Jersey, possibly because of milder temperatures. As long as a bat is flying normally and not struggling, it’s probably just fine. These are likely to be an Eastern Red Bat or a Big Br

Our first eastern red bat pup of the season is ready to fly free for the very first time ❤️ we will miss him dearly but this is why we work so hard raising these precious babies. Our sweet Saffron arrived at just 4 days old suffering from a fractured radius. Thankfully volunteer Ryan transported this sweet boy in the middle of the night. Saffron made a full recovery and flying beautiful, choosing natural foliage to snooze and hunting insects ❤️ Thank you for supporting our efforts and helping us

It's a bundle of babies! Eastern red bat pup season is in full swing here at Bat World Sanctuary. The little ones shown here were found by a member of the public, and our wonderful staff member Kasci drove over an hour to pick them up. A reminder for everyone: if you find a red bat mother on the ground with pups and she appears uninjured, please help her up off the ground (using gloves or a thick cloth!) and place her up high in a tree with some foliage to hide in. Check back with her later, and

Our eastern red bat was released back where she was found…which ironically was in a cemetery. She needed a little pep talk before flying off. Thanks to our apprentice, Nicole, for taking her back home! PS- our new giant bat flight enclosure helped us know that she was 100% ready to go back home. #halloween #bat #bats #spookyseason #cemetary #fall #wildliferehab #wildliferescue #nc #nonprofit #clt #wildlife #carolinawildlife #conservation #batconservation | Carolina Wildlife Conservation Center

Nom! Nom! Nom! Turn up 🔊 We have an Eastern Red Bat that came into care dehydrated and weak. She is starting to perk up and loves her mealworms. #batsarecool #insecteaters #migration Cool 😎 Fact: The little “hooks” at the top of her arms are called thumbs. They use their thumbs to climb up high in trees and structures to take off for flight. MOST Bats cannot take off into flight from the ground. They need to be at least 5 feet off the ground. | Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center

This is an Eastern Red Bat, female. Her name is Hope. She is super tame with me, as she knows me and im her caretaker PSA. Bats native to North America are all ‘Microbats’ they are small and insectivores. All large bats that are located over other parts of the world are known as “Megabats”. Microbats are the ones that use echolocation , Megabats dont (with a couple of exceptions). All bats roost hanging 🙃 upsidedown. Why? Because bats have to “drop” to be able to fly, as they cannot jump up lik

This Eastern Red Bat 🦇 came into our care because rescuer noticed it laying in their driveway. She boxed it up and called us. Upon inspection we think maybe what happened is it came out of hibernation to early and got cold, couldn’t fly and then got attacked by a cat. Wounds on its belly, wing and head. We have her on antibiotics and a little pain meds. She is doing better than expected and is getting more friendly as she sees I’m here to help and not hurt her. If anyone would like to help with

The Eastern red bat is a small bat with distinctive red fur. They can weigh from ¼ to ½ ounce and are usually less than 4” in length. They eat insects, and prefer moths, including several pest species. Eastern red bats are widely distributed through the central and eastern parts of the US and are thought to be one of the most abundant bats in their range. These bats are not as obvious in our landscape because they typically live alone or in small family groups, unlike some of the other bat speci

Happy #BatWeek! 🦇🦇🦇 Let's talk about #MigrationSeason DID YOU KNOW? Birds are known for their yearly migrations. Bird nerds like us look forward to it every year, in fact. 🤓 But did you know that many of our native BATS migrate, too? Cold weather is extra hard for small-bodied creatures, since they lose heat faster. To compensate, their little bodies have an increased caloric demand! So how do they manage this as the weather cools and insects die off for the winter? 🪰❄️ Some cave- and crevi
