#OnThisDayInCherokeeHistory, February 21, 1828, the first issue of the Cherokee Phoenix newspaper was printed in English and in Cherokee. The Cherokee Phoenix was instrumental in helping our people learn to read and write in the Cherokee language and throughout time, has kept our citizens and country informed of important issues and events within our tribe. It was the first newspaper to be published in a Native American language and is still in print today, as an independent tribal newspaper. |

Today the council from the Cherokee Nation, United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians gathered on the site of the Kituwah mound in Cherokee,N.C. for the official meeting of Tri-Council.
