The sound /er/ has a variety of spellings: ‘er’, ‘ur’, ‘ir’, ‘or’, ‘ear’, ‘ar’, ‘urr’, and ‘our’. The most common spelling is ‘er’. The /er/ sound has five spellings, er (term), ir (bird), ur (burn), ear (learn), and or (work).
